Abstract
Isotropic and anisotropic dynamic dipole polarizabilities are calculated for H2 and HeH+. The experimental values for H2, obtained from refractive index data, agree with the theoretical values to within about 0.1%. Previous theoretical–experimental agreement has been of the order of 0.7%. A new approach has been taken with respect to the treatment of the nuclear motion. Some of the problems concerning polarizabilities and nuclear motion are discussed in detail. All the wave functions used contain electron correlation through their explicit dependence on the interelectronic coordinate. Keywords
