Abstract
A class of orthogonal polynomials defined by a weight function of compact support is considered. These are known to satisfy three‐term recursion relations. It is shown, under rather weak restrictions, that the traces of powers of the Jacobi matrices formed from the coefficients in the recursion relations are simply related to Fourier coefficients of the logarithm of the weight function. Keywords
