Abstract
Changes in consumption of a 10% ethanol solution and of tap water by pregnant rats were investigated over the course of gestation. Ethanol intake during the first 2 trimesters of pregnancy matched that of nonmated control animals. During the 3rd trimester ethanol consumption by the pregnant animals decreased. Water intake by the pregnant animals was elevated above that of control animals for most of the gestational period; these changes did not appear to be related to decreases in ethanol consumption. In a 2nd study decreases in consumption of an isocaloric sucrose solution occurred during the same period of pregnancy, while consumption of a saccharin solution remained stable. Common factors apparently control ethanol and carbohydrate intake in the pregnant rat. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
