Abstract
The experiments described indicate that trypsin molecules in solution are able to diffuse through a thin screen of formvar at a rate which is a function of the nature of the material located under the screen. Trypsin molecules will not diffuse through a blanket of formvar as thin as 50 Å deposited on multilayers of long chain fatty acids or amines. However if a few layers of protein coat the fatty acid layers, a much thicker screen of formvar is necessary to prevent the passage of the enzyme. A screen as thick as 2000 Å, depending upon the number and orientation of the underjacent protein layers, may be necessary to prevent this ‘forced diffusion’ from taking place. Of all the synthetic polyaminoacids tested as substitutes for the protein layers, only the poly‐L‐ and poly‐D‐lysine are able to force the enzyme through a blanket.
