THROMBOCYTOPENIA INDUCED BY SODIUM PARA-AMINOSALICYLIC ACID

Abstract
Thrombocytopenia has followed the administration of various drugs. Para-aminosalicylic acid has not heretofore been incriminated, and, therefore, it is of interest to record thrombocytopenia following its administration. REPORT OF A CASE An 18-year-old Negro girl was admitted to the medical service of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Feb. 5, 1952, with the symptoms and signs of tuberculous peritonitis of about six months' duration. There was no history of abnormal bleeding, and there was no family history of hemorrhagic tendency. At laparotomy performed on Feb. 8, 1952, ascites was present and tubercule-like lesions were seen scattered throughout the abdomen. Biopsy revealed pathological evidence of tuberculosis. Pertinent laboratory findings included: hemoglobin level, 9.8 mg. per 100 cc; leukocytes, 5,900 per cubic millimeter; differential count, normal; prothrombin time, 64% ±20%; serum proteins, 7 gm. per 100 cc; albumin, 2.7 gm. per 100 cc; and globulin, 4.3 gm. per 100 cc.
