Abstract
IN 1970, we wrote in this section1: "The fate of ingested sodium during pregnancy is poorly understood. The prevailing view in this country considers the pregnant woman to be an insidious salt retainer... her dietary salt intake is severely restricted, and prophylactic diuretics may be prescribed... On the other hand, others consider pregnant subjects to be insidious sodium wasters and prescribe salt tablets."
