Abstract
A desoxyribosenucleic acid extract of either of 2 R mutants of a strain of type VIII pneumococcus transformed the other R mutant to type VIIIS. Extracts of type II pneumococcus transformed both R mutants to type VIIIS and type IIS, type VIII predominating. Only type IIIS cells were recovered when both R mutants were exposed to type III extracts. Extracts of types I, VII, XIV and XVIII applied to one R mutant produced cells of the donor type and type VIIIS in varying proportions while these extracts applied to the 2d mutant produced cells of the donor type or else transformation did not take place. Keywords
