The oxidation of tryptophan and some related compounds with persulphate

Abstract
Action of alkaline persulfate on DL-tryptophan, DL-kynurenine, 3-indolylacetic acid and indole were examined, and its action on anthranilic acid was re-examined. A number of products were isolated or identified by means of paper chromatography. All the above compounds yielded anthranilic acid, the sulfuric esters of 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid and O-aminophenol, and a product which is probably the sulfuric ester of 5-hydroxyanthranilic acid. DL-tryptophan also yielded formic acid and DL-kynurenine, together with products which are considered to be the sulfuric esters of 3- and 5- hydroxy-DL-kynurenine. These products were obtained in better yield from the oxidation of DL-kynurenine itself. Indole gave indoxyl sulfate in good yield, identical with the naturally occurring ester.
