Least-Squares Method for Optical Correction*

Abstract
This paper represents an attempt to make use of modern computing machinery in a direct attack on the problem of correcting a partially corrected optical system. By ray tracing difference coefficients are computed for a set of rays with respect to bendings of the individual lenses of a system. Assuming linear behavior over a small region a set of linear equations is derived for the desired corrections: The method of least squares gives a “best possible” solution of the equations.
