Abstract
The Bain co-axial circuit is a recent and versatile addition to the semiclosed anaesthetic breathing systems. The relationship between the patient's arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) and fresh gas flow during intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) using this circuit has been reassessed. A mean PaCO2 of 33,4 mmHg for 64 patients was recorded using a fresh gas flow of 100 ml/kg/min and a mean PaCO2 of 37,3 mmHg for 55 patients using a fresh gas flow off 70 ml/kg/min.
