Abstract
The introduction of new high-yielding varieties and an increased usage of fertilizers and pesticides are beginning to have a significant effect on rice production in Asia. Shortage of water, power and time could, however, limit full exploitation of this new technology. Recent developments in minimum tillage techniques could help to alleviate these shortages with the use of existing facilities and without heavy capital expenditure. Widespread adoption of these techniques in Ceylon, Malaysia and Japan has confirmed that they can be readily integrated into local practices.
