Abstract
The epithelium of the gut is composed of four different cell types that differentiate from a common progenitor stem cell pool in the crypts. But what are the signals that influence progenitor cells to adopt one of four possible cell fates? In a Perspective, van den Brink et al. discuss new findings ( Yang et al.) that identify the transcription factor, Math1, as an important mediator of cell fate choice by gut epithelial progenitor cells. Keywords
