PULMONARY MUSCULAR HYPERPLASIA (MUSCULAR CIRRHOSIS OF THE LUNGS)

Abstract
Two cases of pulmonary muscular hyperplasia (so called "muscular cirrhosis of the lungs") are described and the literature is reviewed. The principal pathologic features are fibromuscular induration of the pulmonary interstitial tissue and extreme dilatation of the alveoli and terminal bronchioles. Clinical features are history of protracted pulmonary disease and roentgenologic findings of diffuse pulmonary disease and roentgenologic findings of diffuse pulmonary disease suggestive of a miliary granulomatous process. Thus investigation for pulmonary tuberculosis is often carried out. (Neither case described proved to have pulmonary tuberculosis.) The actual cause of the muscular hyperplasia is believed to be related to chronic inflammation of the lung, although chronic inflammation in itself does not necessarily lead to pulmonary muscular hyperplasia.
