Abstract
The minimal effective dose of a new sulfonamide (para-aminophenyl-2-sulfamido-3-methoxy-pyrazine or Far[long dash]mitalia-204/122) against the multiplication of trachoma virus in the yolk sac of the embryonated chicken egg was similar to that of sulfamethoxy-pridazine. Like other sulfonamides, Farmitalia-204/122 exerts a pro-virucidal effect but a virostatic action which could be antagonized by para-aminobenzoic-acid. In mice, Farmitalia-204/122 exerts a protective action at dosages significantly lower than those necessary with the other sulfonamides. This compound and its acetylated derivative (N1-acetyl p-amino-pheny1-2-sulfamido 3-methoxy-pyrazine) exhibits a marked protective action on mice, even when they were given orally or subcutaneously several days before intracerebral infection. They are suitable for the mass treatment of trachoma. Keywords
