Abstract Creep and Author Inflation

Abstract
S were first included in the Journal in 1968,1 and serve many functions.2 , 3 They permit readers to preview papers before examining their entire text, and allow triage of papers into those to be read immediately, those to be considered later, and those to be skipped. Overly brief abstracts do not provide sufficient information for proper triage, and overly long ones detract from screening efficiency by taking too much time. Abstracts are often read without their papers, especially abstracts disseminated separately through electronic media.
