Abstract
It is shown that a large class of approximations in statistical thermodynamics that are based on the free-energy variational principle for the density operator yield expressions for the macroscopic quantities of the system that are consistent from both the statistical-mechanical and thermodynamical points of view. This corrects some erroneous statements in the literature. Keywords
