Resistance of Nicotiana Species to the Green Peach Aphid12

Abstract
Forty-five Nicotiana species and 12 related varieties and polyploid or horticultural strains were tested for resistance to Myzus persirae (Sulzer). The highly resistant species were related phylogenetically, indicating that the mechanism or mechanisms of resistance may have a common origin. A possible relationship between polyploidy and resistance also was noted. The paper discusses development of insect resistant tobacco varieties through interspecific hybridization and the effects of the resistance mechanism (s) on commercial quality.
