Abstract
We present MK spectral classification and UBV photometry of a sample of stars originally selected as ‘ultraviolet objects’ from satellite photometry with the S2/68 experiment. Most of the stars are spectroscopically normal. A number of hot subluminous stars were also found; some are reported here for the first time. We also give radial velocities for some of the stars observed. The majority of the apparently normal early B stars at high galactic latitudes are not runaway stars. We propose that these stars are subluminous disc-population analogues of horizontal branch B stars of Population II.Keywords
