Abstract
Methods for determining upper-atmosphere density are briefly reviewed. Values of air density derived from orbital decay are compared with those obtained from instruments and shown to be systematically higher. The difference is too large to be due entirely to errors in the drag-derived values and cannot be explained at present if the absolute accuracy claimed for the gauges is realistic. Keywords
