Abstract

The current state of proficiency testing programs for clinical laboratories with special emphasis on those programs related to toxicology are presented. The content includes a discussion of the need for such programs, the reasons for their creation, the types of programs offered, and their administration. The federal and state laws pertaining to proficiency testing are mentioned but not discussed in detail.
