Abstract
This experiment confirms an earlier finding that similarity in size between test and masking stimuli is directly related to the extent of backward masking. In addition, it is shown that this relation is in part due to the greater difficulty in perceptually segregating test from mask when these are similar in size. The remainder of the effect, however, seems attributable to a retroactive masking effect that varies directly with stimulus similarity. Keywords
