Abstract
THE concept that thyroid autoantibodies may cross the placenta and sometimes produce, or be associated with, fetal thyroid damage has been investigated by us1 , 3 and others.4 5 6 7 8 Data presented in this report further support this concept and suggest that the occurrence of some cases of athyreotic cretinism is closely associated with, or possibly directly related to, the presence of an autoimmune process in the mother.Material and MethodsPatientsAthyreotic cretinism was determined by history, physical examination and laboratory tests.9 There was no reason to suspect congenital goitrous cretinism in any of the patients.Serum was collected from the mothers of . . .
