Abstract
Records, extending over 10 yrs., are given of the plants colonizing bare chalk at Harefield, Middlesex. Two charac-teristic quadrats were studied in detail, on level and sloping chalk, and observations on 2 limited, but typical, areas are recorded. Lotus corniculatus, Medicago lupulina, Arrhena-therum elatius, Festuca ovina and F. rubre were the chief herbaceous colonists at this stage, Melilotus officinalis was rapidly ousted. Salix caprea, S. cinerea and Betula, Acer pseudoplatanus, Crataegus, Fraxinus and Quercus robur were the chief woody plants. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
