Abstract
Tumors that produce extensive internal organ metastases are those most likely to metastasize to the skin. Follicular thyroid carcinoma falls into this category, but only 1 case of unspecified thyroid carcinoma metastasizing to the skin, and only 2 such cases of again unspecified thyroid cardinoma were found in a literature review extending back beyond 1900. Twenty-two cases of metastatic carcinoma to the skin, none from a thyroid neoplasm, were reported, and the disporportionate frequency of scalp lesions was noted. This apparent scalp predilection could be due to the vascularity and relative immobility of this skin at this site. It appears that this patient represents the 1st documented case of skin metastases from a follicular thyroid carcinoma.
