Abstract
The idea of prescription of exercise by general practitioners in schemes involving local authority leisure services is receiving much attention as a means to promote physical activity. However, there is little published information on the evaluation of the processes involved. This paper describes the pilot of a randomised controlled trial which was suspended after three months for reasons discussed. As many similar schemes are beginning all over Britain the lessons learnt from this pilot may inform others planning evaluation. Keywords
