Abstract
The Macedo—Litovitz hybrid equation for the viscosity of liquids is derived using statistical-mechanical arguments. The formulation is based upon the assumption that diffusion in liquids is governed by (1) the presence of an adjacent free volume of certain size into which a molecule can jump and (2) the acquisition of sufficient energy by the diffusing molecule to escape from the force field of its neighbors. Keywords
