Abstract
I recently heard an undocumented but probably accurate estimate: two million clients visit Weight Watcher meetings each week! The only other commercial ventures that seem to inspire similar enthusiasm are roadside restaurants serving between-meal, high-calorie snacks. Although Americans are becoming increasingly weight conscious, there is little evidence that the incidence of obesity is slacking off. Every imaginable type of therapy has been suggested and tried, but there is as yet no reason to believe that one or another type of behavior modification or nutritional counseling can provide a reasonable expectation of long-term weight reduction.
