TREATMENT OF ACTINOMYCOSIS WITH ISONIAZID

Abstract
The remarkable development of antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents in recent years has resulted in improved methods of treatment in many infectious diseases; however, despite exhaustive clinical and laboratory investigations, many fungous infections continue to be generally fatal.1 The commonest of these diseases is actinomycosis.2 Although radiation therapy and surgery3 are of value in localized actinomycotic infections, the sulfonamides and penicillin provided the greatest improvement in the prognosis of this mycotic disease.4 Nonetheless, even with these agents the morbidity and mortality remained significant.5 Recently aureomycin was demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of this condition.6 While searching for an inexpensive, effective, and nontoxic therapeutic agent for use in actinomycosis, isoniazid (Nydrazid) was considered. Isoniazid was recently demonstrated to be of value in tuberculosis.7 Inasmuch as it has long been recognized that the tissue reaction and clinical picture in tuberculosis and actinomycosis are very
