Maximal histalog test in control subjects and patients with peptic ulcer.

Abstract
The betazole test is a safe, reproducible means of eliciting maximal secretion, but secretory responses overlap so much that differentiation of categories of patients is unsatisfactory. Correlation between basal and stimulated secretion was noted. Only 1/6 of patients with duodenal ulcers secreted more than 30 mEq/30 min of acid, and 10% of both groups secreted less than 10 mEq/30 min. Increased parietal cell mass is unlikely to be a major determinant in duodenal ulcer; impaired secretory capacity, which suggests gastric mucosal damage, occurs in a considerable proportion of patients of all categories.
