Demonstration of Antibody in Rabbit Alveolar Macrophages with Failure to Transfer Antibody Production

Abstract
Summary: Under the experimental conditions described neither lung fragments nor alveolar macrophages were able to transfer the production of antibody to normal recipient rabbits. Equal weights of spleen and comparable numbers of spleen cells when transferred resulted in measurable antibody in the recipient serum. Extracts of alveolar macrophages contained relatively large amounts of antibody whether obtained from actively or passively immunized animals. The mechanism involved in the latter phenomenon is not clear from these experiments, but does not appear to be related to antibody production by these cells.
