Abstract
No specific relationship was observed between Congo Red Index and Fe59 clearance rate, which were applied as indicators of the RES function in the presence of infection. Fe59 clearance rate as well as incorporation rate showed almost similar change in both infected dogs and rabbits. However, distributions of Fe in the various organs significantly differed in these two animals following infection. Effects of infection on Fe metabolism were studied in 5 groups of dogs, the non-treated (control), hypophysectomized, splenectomized, RES blocked and splenectomized plus RES blocked dogs. As for the results, functions of each organ of the RES in relation to the Fe metabolism or to the Fe trapping rate by the RES, were found never to show the same attitude toward the condition under which the animals were placed or the time when they were measured. On the basis of all data obtained from the present experiment, we assumed that the pituitary gland may control the reactivity of the spleen as an organ of the RES in the presence of infection, and that the spleen further controls the function of the reticuloendothelial system of other organs. Keywords
