Abstract
Isopropenylcarborane could not be polymerized by conventional radical and ionic methods. A low molecular weight polymer of DP = 10 was obtained by the use of aluminum chloride as catalyst at 150–170°C. Carboranylmethyl acrylate was homopolymerized and copolymerized with fluoroacrylates by using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst. The Tg of the homopolymer was about 165°C. The difficulty in polymerizing the isopropenylcarborane and the high Tg value for carboranylmethyl acrylate polymer have been partially attributed to the steric requirements of the carborane group. Keywords
