Abstract
This book, which consists of papers presented at a conference held in Miami, Florida, USA, in November 1999, addresses issues concerning the world sugar and sweetener markets. Section I (chapters 1-5) of the book provides a backdrop of the institutional structure of the world sweetener market and ongoing trade negotiations. Section II (chapters 6-16) focuses on individual countries (or groups of countries) that are major players in the sweetener industry. Section III (chapters 17-23) deals with the theoretical and/or quantitative approaches to sweetener markets, and provides differing perspectives on the US sugar policy reform. The final section (chapters 24-26) deals with attempts to free up the world sugar market, and quantifies the potential impacts should movements toward freer trade occur.
