Immunoelectron Microscopic Localization of Corticotropin-Releasing Factor in the Rat Hypothalamus

Abstract
Using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique, we performed the ultrastructural localization of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-like immunoreactivity in the rat hypothalamus. It could be demonstrated that CRF-like immunoreactivity was present in the dense core vesicles of nerve endings located in the external zone of the median eminence. In the paraventricular nucleus, immunostaining was also observed in the dense core vesicles of a few neuronal cell bodies. These results support the hypothesis that the CRF recently discovered is of physiological significance in the control of ACTH secretion.
