Pyonephrosis: sonography in the diagnosis and management

Abstract
The sonographic findings of pyonephrosis in 14 patients were characterized and correlated with simple hydronephrosis. The criteria for recognizing pyonephrosis include an obstructed pelvocalyceal system with persistent, dependent echoes; a shifting urine debris level; dense, peripheral echoes with shadowing secondary to gas-forming organism; and poor transonicity with echoes completely filling the pelvis and calyces. The important role of sonography in the diagnosis and management of these patients is emphasized.
