Abstract
An American expert on Russian politics analyzes prominent claims that American “Russia-watchers” have mischaracterized and misunderstood the post-Soviet situation, contributed to the dissolution of the USSR, and helped cause Russia's socioeconomic crisis. Assertions that a change in the mind-set of American scholarship on Russia and that a transfer of billions of dollars to the Russian government are necessary to ameliorate the situation also are examined. The article draws upon a large body of contemporary scholarly work and newspaper articles as well as United Nations and World Bank statistics.
