Abstract
The cross section for the inelastic magnetic scattering of unpolarized neutrons in metallic nickel has been calculated for temperatures in the paramagnetic region. The work is based on an expression for the magnetic susceptibility obtained from density-functional theory in the local approximation, which is evaluated using semiempirical energy bands. The scattering cross section has a peak for nonzero energies for large momentum transfer which is not, however, related to propagating spin excitations. Keywords
