Abstract
Views of mathematics as absolute and not person-made, which are popular but not consistent with the practice of mathematics, are presented through the voices and experiences of women, most of whom have avoided mathematics. Research on women's reasoning is used to present a new perspective for understanding this experience. Strategies for teaching mathematics developed with math-avoidant students are offered as a means of enlarging the group of people who can bring mathematics effectively into their lives.
