Abstract
In the gastric juice of subjects with normal acidity (pH 2) intestinal bacteria are destroyed about 3-4 times more rapidly than in saline at the same pH. In the gastric juice of achlorhydric subjects adjusted to pH2, however, the destruction of bacteria, except that of salmonella, is greatly inhibited. Both effects remain after 30 min. continuous incubation at 100[degree]C. The factor which increases the effect of acidity is dialysable, but not the inhibiting factor. Keywords
