Abstract
For supersonic and hypersonic vehicles the absence or occurrence of transition to turbulence often becomes a primary design consideration. Yet testing facilities cannot duplicate the corresponding environmental design conditions and the designer must rely on extrapolations, generally with several parameters varying simultaneously. This paper attempts to clarify what type of information appears currently most desirable. First a succinct review of the known factors affecting high-speed transition is presented. In particular, the areas of uncertainty are outlined and their implications discussed. The factual information is used as a basis for an assessment of possible transition research projects and their relative priorities. Keywords
