Abstract
A new concept of gastrointestinal (G-I) transit is presented including an exptl. procedure for its measurement in rats. G-I transit is defined as the fraction of the quantity of material contained in a given segment which is delivered to its adjacent distal segment/unit of time. The exptl. procedure consists of the admn. of a non-absorbable dye (T-1824) into the stomach with subsequent time analyses of the G-I segments for their quantitative dye content. The relationship of transit to small intestinal absorption is discussed and an objective method for the measurement of absorption availability is descr. The kinetics of transit are expressed mathematically and the parameters of the descriptive equations are calculated. Keywords
