Effects of Time-Varying Diffuse Illumination on Holography

Abstract
The process of making a hologram of an object illuminated with time-varying diffuse coherent and monochromatic light is treated theoretically. The effects of diffuse illumination on the degradation of reconstructed images and on a distortion term (zero-order diffraction term) are discussed. Two important results are obtained for diffuse illumination; (1) contraction of the distortion term in reconstruction wavefronts, and (2) an increase in the degradation of the two reconstructed images. The improvement of image degradation resulting from the distortion term is shown by means of diffuse illumination, and typical examples confirming this fact are presented in case of a Fraunhofer hologram.Keywords
