Geometric construction of the stability limits of synchronous machines

Abstract
The paper analyses the conditions for stability of synchronous generators, or motors in steady-state operation, with and without assistance from voltage-regulating equipment. A simple geometric construction on a ‘capability chart’ of the machine is used to display the operating limits and to demonstrate the influence of exciter time constant and damping coefficient on dynamic stability.
