Antigenic Response to Booster Dose of Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids: Seven to Thirteen Years after Primary Inoculation of Noninstitutionalized Children

Abstract
A booster dose of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, aluminum phosphate adsorbed, containing two Lf (Limes flocculation) units of each toxoid in a dose of 0.2 ml., was given to a group of 174 noninstitutionalized subjects who had no record of having received other booster doses since their primary inoculations 7 to 13 years earlier. All, including those with barely detectable titers, responded rapidly and vigorously to the booster dose, including the few subjects who had received only one or two doses of antigen in their primary inoculation. The highest titers observed occurred at the end of 2 weeks following the booster injection. Antitoxin titers then declined slowly to prebooster levels. The booster dose produced no undesirable reactions in this group of subjects.
