Risk of Cutaneous Melanoma in Dysplastic Nevus Syndrome Types A and B

Abstract
To the Editor: Dysplastic nevi are markers for both familial and nonfamilial melanoma.1 2 3 4 5 6 We have proposed the following classification of kindreds with dysplastic nevi1 , 4 , 5: Type A, sporadic dysplastic nevi without melanoma; Type B, familial dysplastic nevi without melanoma; Type C, sporadic dysplastic nevi with melanoma; Type D-1, familial dysplastic nevi with one person with melanoma in the family; and Type D-2, familial dysplastic nevi with two or more family members with melanoma. In the families with Type D-2, the dysplastic nevi–melanoma trait is autosomal dominant with high penetrance,7 with a relative risk of melanoma of 148 in family members . . .
