Chemistry of polynuclear compounds. Part XII. Polynuclear hydrido-carbonyls of ruthenium

Abstract
The polynuclear hydrido-carbonyls of ruthenium, α-H4Ru4(CO)12, β-H4Ru4(CO)12, and H2Ru4(CO)13 have been prepared by acidification of the products obtained from the reaction of Ru3(CO)12 with base, by the reaction of Ru3(CO)12 with sodium borohydride, and by the action of carbon monoxide–hydrogen at moderate temperature and pressures on red solution obtained by the interaction of ruthenium trichloride with carbon monoxide in ethanol. The corresponding deuterides D2Ru4(CO)13 and β-D4Ru4(CO)12 have also been prepared. The presence of hydrido-ligands in these compounds has been confirmed by n.m.r. and mass spectral data and possible structures for these compounds are discussed in the light of these and i.r. data.
