Abstract
Renal oxygen consumption was measured in normal resting human subjects on the basis of (1) the oxygen contents of peripheral arterial blood and renal venous blood obtained by venous catheterization, and (2) the renal blood flow determined as the Na p-aminohippurate clearance and corrected for renal PAH extraction. Resting control oxygen consumption averaged 10.3 ml./min. in 5 subjects, ranging from 6 ml./min. to 14.2 ml./ min. Abdominal compression at 80 mm. Hg reduced renal oxygen consumption to 6.1 ml./min. on the average or by 41%. At the same time renal blood flow was reduced on the avg. by 52%. There was no significant change in renal venous oxygen content in 11 subjects. Keywords
