SOME STATISTICAL OBSERVATIONS ON A CO-OPERATIVE STUDY OF HUMAN PULMONARY PATHOLOGY

Abstract
The results are given of a cooperative study by a number of pathologists in different centers in the United States of the conditions at autopsy in the bronchial mucosae of all available cases as presented to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Tobacco Industry Research Committee. The problems involved in obtaining a reliable statistical analysis of the data, particularly as applied to the incidence of lung carcinoma in male and female individuals in various age groups and as affected by environmental variables, are discussed. The authors stress the degree of variability in the evaluations of the same sample by different pathologists.
