The swelling of single collagen fibre-bundles

Abstract
The swelling was studied microscopically while the fibre-bundle was supporting a small but constant load. The swelling action became less sensitive on repeated swelling and deswelling of the fibre-bundle. By the method employed, it was possible to distinguish between the 2 factors, "plumping" and "opening up." The maximum swelling was due to both of the above factors. The point of maximum swelling was moved to a higher pH in a fibre-bundle from fresh hide.
