Abstract
Common Australian practices in conifer plantation establishment and management are criticized in relation to long-term soil effects. Podsolization of soils under even-aged pure coniferous stands has been serious in other climates and it appears that present growth rates of Australian plantations may not be maintained over future rotations unless similar consequences are avoided here. Ameliorative measures, such as selection cuttings and mixtures of soil-improving species with conifers, are suggested. Keywords
